Who We Are
We are vcfo Holdings, Inc. — a fractional finance, accounting, and HR firm founded in Austin in 1996. Our consultants are W-2 employees of the firm who embed with your leadership team, not contractors placed and moved on. Four markets, national reach, and 30 years of staying with clients.
That employment model is the whole difference. It means the person in your Monday meeting has a peer group of CFOs, controllers, and HR leaders behind them, a firm that answers for the work, and no incentive to hand you off. When your needs change, the team changes shape — you don't start over with a new vendor.

How vcfo Works
We work inside your business rather than beside it. A vcfo leader joins your team from week one — onsite, remote, or hybrid — and the wider firm stands behind them. Five things shape every engagement: how we embed, the depth we bring, the impact we are accountable for, who we are, and where we work.
01
Embedded Leadership
We work as part of your team, in person or virtual. Your CFO, controller, or HR leader joins your leadership team from week one — onsite, remote, or hybrid, whichever fits how you actually operate.
02
Depth of Expertise
Senior leaders with 20+ years of experience across industries. Behind every engagement sits the wider firm: finance, controller, HR, and transaction specialists you can draw on as needs change, without renegotiating who you work with.
03
Proven Impact
6,000+ engagements delivering measurable results for startups, middle-market companies, and public companies.
04
Dedicated Team
W-2 professionals committed to your long-term success. Our consultants are full-time employees of vcfo, which means continuity, accountability, and a peer group they can pull expertise from. Not contractors. Not a staffing agency.

Our History
vcfo was founded in Austin, Texas, in 1996 to provide experienced financial leadership to growing businesses. Since then the firm has expanded its capabilities to include fractional CFO leadership, controller and finance support, HR and people operations, transaction advisory, and enterprise value services, with teams serving clients across the United States.
Founded in Austin in 1996 — one of the original fractional CFO firms in the country, and still independent.
Thirty years of the same model: senior finance and HR leaders on staff, embedded with companies that need the judgement without the full-time seat. The markets grew from one to four, the services widened from CFO work to controller, accounting, HR, transaction advisory, and v360®, and the employment model never changed.

Frequently Asked Questions
vcfo is a fractional executive services firm that provides senior finance, accounting, human resources, and transaction leadership. Founded in 1996, the firm supports companies through fractional engagements, interim leadership assignments, and focused projects.
Its executives work alongside management teams to diagnose problems, establish priorities, and help carry the work through implementation—not simply deliver recommendations and leave execution to the client.
vcfo combines an established operating history with an employee-based delivery model and hands-on execution. Its senior leaders generally bring more than 20 years of experience, and the firm reports completing more than 6,000 engagements.
Clients receive a dedicated W-2 executive rather than a contractor sourced through a marketplace. That leader can also draw on colleagues across CFO leadership, controllership, HR, finance operations, and transaction advisory when the assignment expands or a specialized issue arises.
The result is individual accountability backed by the resources of a broader firm.
vcfo’s fractional executives are W-2 employees, not independent contractors sourced through a marketplace. They work within an established firm and can draw on colleagues in related disciplines.
The employment model does not replace the need for a strong personal fit, but it provides more institutional support than relying entirely on one unaffiliated consultant.
vcfo’s senior leaders generally bring more than 20 years of professional experience, while its CFOs average approximately 25 years of cross-industry leadership experience. Many have previously held CFO, controller, operations, or senior HR positions.
That background can be especially valuable during periods of growth, transactions, systems projects, or leadership transitions. Still, tenure alone is not enough. The assigned executive should have experience with challenges similar to those facing the client and be able to communicate effectively with the people responsible for carrying out the plan.
vcfo begins with the problem the company needs to solve, not an available résumé.
During discovery, the firm works to understand the company’s objectives, risks, constraints, and definition of success. It can then match the engagement with a senior leader whose experience fits the assignment.
Relevant considerations may include the company’s stage, industry, internal team, timeline, and need for experience in areas such as fundraising, mergers and acquisitions, ERP implementation, or organizational change.
Clients work with an assigned vcfo executive who becomes familiar with the business, its team, and its priorities. The relationship is not designed to function as a rotating help desk.
When another perspective is useful, the lead executive can involve colleagues with relevant finance, accounting, HR, or transaction experience.
A fractional CFO usually provides ongoing leadership at a part-time cadence. An interim CFO temporarily fills a full-time vacancy or leads the finance function through a defined transition.
For example, interim support may be appropriate after an unexpected departure or while the company searches for a permanent CFO. Fractional support is generally better suited to a continuing need that does not require full-time coverage.
The two models can overlap. An engagement may begin intensively during a transition and then move to a lighter cadence once the situation stabilizes.
Yes. In many engagements, the CFO works alongside all three.
The controller and accounting team continue to manage accurate records, reporting and controls. The CFO helps connect that work to forecasting, capital planning, business strategy and leadership decisions. They may also coordinate with the company’s CPA, tax advisers, auditors, banks and lenders.
The goal is not to create another layer of confusion. Roles, decision rights and communication expectations should be made clear at the beginning.
Embedded leadership means working within the company’s normal decision-making rhythm.
A vcfo executive may attend management meetings, collaborate directly with finance or HR staff, help assign responsibilities, and remain involved as priorities move from discussion to execution. This differs from receiving occasional outside recommendations without implementation support.
The role can be performed in person, remotely, or through a hybrid arrangement. Whatever the format, the executive needs sufficient access, context, and authority to contribute meaningfully.
vcfo works with the leadership and functional teams already in place; its approach is not based on replacing people by default.
Early in an engagement, the executive listens, assesses how decisions are made, and identifies gaps in information, ownership, or capability. The answer may involve creating a clearer management cadence, coaching an internal leader, improving reporting, or redefining responsibilities.
In some situations, a role or process may need to change, but that conclusion should follow the diagnosis. A strong engagement makes the client’s team more capable instead of creating a permanent parallel structure outside the business.
Yes. vcfo provides finance, accounting, and human resources leadership through one firm.
That can be helpful when a business issue crosses functional lines. For example, a growth plan may affect financial forecasting, organizational design, compensation, and hiring. Clients can engage one discipline or combine services when coordination adds value.
vcfo offers fractional, interim, and project- or transaction-based support.
Fractional engagements provide ongoing leadership without requiring a permanent executive hire. Interim leaders step in during a vacancy, executive search, or transition. Project-based engagements focus on a defined objective, such as an acquisition, Quality of Earnings analysis, systems implementation, audit preparation, or integration initiative.
The best model depends on whether the company needs ongoing leadership, temporary coverage, or specialized support for a particular event.
Yes. The scope can expand, narrow, or shift as priorities change.
A client might begin with an urgent cash-flow or reporting problem and later move into strategic planning and team development. A financing, acquisition, audit, or ERP implementation may temporarily require additional support.
Any change in scope should be discussed and documented rather than happening without clear visibility.
vcfo is headquartered in Austin and has teams serving Central Texas, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, and Denver–Colorado. It also works remotely with clients outside those markets and states that national and global support is available when needed.
Engagements may be conducted on-site, virtually, or through a hybrid arrangement, depending on the work and the client’s operating style.
Bring what you have. Perfect information is not required.
Useful materials may include recent financial statements, current cash balances, a budget or forecast, debt agreements, board reports and an organization chart for the finance team. More importantly, be prepared to explain the decision, problem or deadline that prompted the conversation.
A clear description of what leadership cannot currently see or decide is often more useful than a large collection of reports.
No. vcfo provides fractional executive leadership and related advisory and execution support, but it is not licensed as a Certified Public Accounting firm.
Clients may still need an independent CPA, auditor, attorney, tax specialist, or other licensed adviser. The scope should clearly state what vcfo will own, what the internal team will own, and where an outside professional must remain involved.
The first conversation is used to understand the company’s goals, immediate concerns, and the decisions that require stronger leadership.
When the situation fits vcfo’s capabilities, the firm can assess the need in greater detail, identify an appropriate executive, and outline the proposed scope and working arrangement.
Perfect books or a fully developed project brief are not required. A clear description of the problem, the deadline, and what leadership cannot currently see or decide is enough to begin.
